Resumen de Valoración ornamental de las calizas de la Formación Moniello (Principado de Asturias)

Lower Devonian to Albian-Cenomanian carbonate and siliclastic formations have been investigated in the Asturias Principality in order to locate potential rock massifs to be used for ornamental or construction purposes. Best results have been obtained from the carbonate facies of the lower-medium Devonian, in particular from the Moniello Formation. Slates and granites have not been investigated in this project.
Chromatic homogeneity, characterisation tests, the extent of the formation, and the existence of beds with adequate thickness for a potential exploitation, has allowed establishing an area of interest for dimensional stone within this formation. Further investigations are recommended to define the feasibility for an ornamental stone open cast quarry in the selected zone.
