Resumen de Actualización de los principales yacimientos españoles de wollastonita

José Manuel Baltuille Martín

  • This paper has been realized inside of cooperation relationship between the IGME and the General Direction of Energetic Policy and Mines. The project consisted in the investigation and evaluation of wollastonite deposits in Spain and the World.

The Merida area presents a small deposit (around 25,000 t of mineral) inside a carbonatic series, calcareous and dolomitic rocks with layers of chert, of Lower Cambrian age. The principal use of this wollastonite would be the ceramic industry and like filler too. The lithologies of the Aroche area are marbles with diopside and/or forsterite, quartz-feldspathic gneisses, schists and calcium silicated rocks of Vendien-Lower Cambrian age, crossed by granitic and gabroid hercynian intrusions. These materials are affected by a contact metamorphism of high-medium grade. The wollastonite of Colmenar Viejo (30% in the rock) is disseminated on metamorphic limestones (skarn) and presented 1,7 Mt of probed reserves. The mining project had technical viability but the great social troubles with the population of the village finished with it. Finally, Aldea del Obispo deposit is placed in Salamanca, near to Portuguese border. The stratigraphic series are metasediments and granits corresponding to Schist-Crauwackic Complex. This great deposit, with 4,5 Mt of probed reserves will be developed on the near future.
