    Desde sus orígenes a finales del siglo XIX, la prensa portuguesa en Estados Unidos ha sido un medio relevante de comunicación social entre los inmigrantes. Por medio de la recopilación de elementos de análisis de carácter simbólico y paradigmático provenientes de varias fuentes hemerográficas o de archivo, este artículo intenta analizar esencialmente el rol informativo e instructivo de este fenómeno periodístico desde una perspectiva histórica, centrada en las primeras décadas del siglo XX, cuando la producción de periódicos en portugués adquirió cuantitativamente mayor relevancia.

    Since its origins in the late nineteenth century, the Portuguese press in the United States has been a significant means of social communication among immigrants. Via the compilation of symbolic and paradigmatic elements from various newspaper and archive sources, this article seeks to analyse the informative and educational role of this journalistic phenomenon from a historical perspective, focusing on the first decades of the twentieth century, when the production of newspapers in Portuguese acquired quantitatively greater relevance.
