Resumen de Holocene evolution of the Catumbela delta (Angola): from a deflected to asymmetric wavedominated delta

  We present the results of research on the stratigraphy and morpho-sedimentary evolution of the Catumbela delta (Angola). The planform geometry of this delta is characteristic of a wave-dominated accumulation strongly influenced by north longshore drift. The present study shows a case of major morphological transformations in a wave dominated delta due to successive shifts in the location of the river and distributary channels. In a millennial time scale a trend for updrift relocation of the river mouth is observed, that is responsible for the transition from a deflected to an asymmetric delta type. Avulsion processes in the delta plain explain this transition.

  Apresenta-se uma investigação sobre a estratigrafia e evolução morfo-sedimentar do delta Catumbela (Angola). A geometria em planta deste delta é característica de uma acumulação dominada por ondas e fortemente influenciada por uma corrente de deriva litoral para norte. O presente estudo mostra um caso em que um delta dominado por ondas sofre grandes transformações morfológicas devido a mudanças sucessivas na localização dos canais fluviais e distributários. Para a escala do último milénio, observa-se uma tendência para a deslocalização no sentido barlamar do troço terminal do rio e da sua foz que é responsável por profundas alterações morfológicas no delta. Os processos de avulsão na planície delta, por si só, podem explicar estas alterações.
