Resumen de Protestant Martyr Saints: The Sacralization of Protestant Victims of Catholic Persecution in Texts of Spanish Reformers Living in Exile

Marina Ortrud

  • The article deals with the works of Francisco de Enzinas and Juan Pérez de Pineda, two important Spanish reformists living in exile. Based on the analysis of their texts, it is shown how Protestant victims of the Inquisition are stylized into martyrs and how this policy became an important element of Protestant religious practice. Furthermore, by pointing out the similarities and differences to the Catholic tradition of martyrology, the particularities of that para-sacralization are represented.
