Although some scholars argue the converse, the Nursing Madonna did not disappear from Spanish paintings after the Council of Trent. Throughout the 17th century, artists continued to depict the bare-breasted Virgin in counter-reformatory Spain. This contribution aims to point out why they did so and how they were influenced by theological discussions about the relations between nudity and the sacred.
