As part of their ministry, Roman Catholic priests were obliged to pray the canonical hours. During the first century of the conquest of Mexico and before the Council of Trent was held, this practice was used to evangelize the indigenous population. However, after the Council of Trent it was utilized as a way to segregate indigeneity from priesthood. The conflict between both policies is studied by consulting the local canon law and historical records.
