  • In 16th and 17th century Spain, aristocratic bullfighting practices constituted an important component of the representative performances demonstrating power and legitimating hierarchical structures. The article presents the ambivalent clerical attitude towards bullfighting, retracing a discursive transformation from approval to dissociation and pointing out parallels to the interests, values, and arguments that led to the different opinions.
