This article aims to deepen the scholarly research on the identity function of Christianity in medieval Western society by examining the role of parishes in shaping local communities in rural areas. It therefore lays its focus on a rural area of Castilla called the Campo de Calatrava, a lordship of the Military Order of Calatrava. For this purpose, 39 parish churches are studied between 1471 and 1539.
