    Les lluites de poder dins l’Església han estat una constant al llarg de la història. Un dels moments clau d’aquestes va ser el convuls període del Cisma d’Occident (1378-1429), durant el qual s’oposaren el papa de Roma i el d’Avinyó. Al mateix temps, les canongies implicaven el prestigi social de les famílies que les ostentaven. Nicolau Espanyol, membre d’una de les nissagues més importants de la Mallorca medieval, va obtenir la seva canongia en el context cismàtic, en un moment de proliferació de concessió de beneficis per part dels pontífexs d’ambdues obediències. Però l’accés a una segona canongia que havia estat concedida en primera instància a Domènec Pons causà un llarg plet a la Cúria Romana. La mort de Nicolau Espanyol el 1391 no va suposar la tranquil·litat del Capítol catedralici, que tingué problemes tant per proveir la prebenda vacant com amb els hereus del difunt.

    Power struggles within the church have been a common occurrence throughout history. A key moment in this respect was the tumultuous period of the Western Schism (1378-1429), which saw the confrontation between the pope in Rome and the pope in Avignon. At the same time, the canonries implied the social prestige of the families that occupied them. Nicolau Espanyol, member of one of the most important families in Majorca during the Middle Ages, obtained his canonry in the context of the Schism, at a time when there was a proliferation of concessions of benefits by the popes of both observances. But the access to a second canonry which had first been given to Domènec Pons caused a lengthy lawsuit in the Pontifical Curia. Nicolau Espanyol’s death in 1391 did not result in tranquillity for the cathedral chapter, which was to have problems filling the vacant canonry, and with the deceased’s heirs.
