  The gherkin is a traditional culture of the northeastern agriculture, being cultivated mainly by the small producers. Most of those small producers make use of the irrigation with waters proceeding small reservoirs or shallow wells, presenting inferior quality, with high salinity levels. That work was developed with the objective of evaluating the effect of the salinity of the water of the irrigation in the germination and energy of gherkin seedlings. The used statistical design was randomized entirely, with five treatments (T1-0.5; T2-2.0; T3- 3.5; T4-5.0; T7-6.5 dS m-1) and four repetitions, being the experimental unit acted by a tray containing 25 seeds.

  The salinity affects the germination parameters and vigour of the seedlings with different intensities. The germination was influenced by the salinity, with significant reduction in salinity starting from 2.0 dS m-1. The matter accumulation dries in the seedlings went to the most affected characteristic for the salinity of the irrigation water

  O maxixe é uma cultura tradicional da agricultura nordestina, sendo cultivado principalmente pelos pequenos produtores. A maioria desses pequenos produtores faz uso da irrigação com águas provindas pequenos reservatórios ou poços rasos, apresentando qualidade inferior, com elevados níveis de salinidade. Esse trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da salinidade da água da irrigação na germinação e vigor de plântulas de maxixe. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos (T1-0,5; T2-2,0; T3-3,5; T4-5,0; T7-6,5 dS m-1) e quatro repetições, sendo a unidade experimental representada por uma bandeja contendo 25 sementes. elevada concentração salina influencia na germinação do maxixe, sendo afetada com salinidade a partir de 2,0 dS m-1. A salinidade afeta os parâmetros de germinação e vigor das plântulas com diferentes intensidades. O acúmulo de matéria seca nas plântulas foi à característica mais afetada pela salinidade da água de irrigação.
