El texto propone la pregunta: ¿El despliegue de formas y niveles que se advierte en la naturaleza está presidido por la continuidad o la discontinuidad? Después de una consideración general del problema, detecta que los dos casos donde con mayor probabilidad podría detectarse una discontinuidad tienen que ver con la emergencia de la vida y de la consciencia. Efectúa una exploración aclaratoria de los conceptos de “materia”, “vida”, “consciencia” y “reducción”. Se resume la historia de la contraposición entre reduccionismo y antirreduccionismo en la evolución de las relaciones entre física, biología y psicología. La discusión conduce por último a, por un lado, plantear e intentar responder tres interrogantes: ¿Se reduce la vida a las leyes que rigen la no-vida? ¿Se reduce la realidad de la vida a la realidad de la no vida?¿Se reducen las leyes de la vida a las leyes de la no-vida? Por otro lado, a propósito de la relación de lo mental con lo biológico y lo físicoquímico, se plantea la pertinencia de la distinción entre lo “nomológico” y lo “nomogónico”. De este modo se conceptúa separadamente lo relativo a la vigencia de las leyes y a su instauración y reforma.

Continuity and discontinuity in the development of natural structures. This paper focuses in the following question: is the development of different forms and levels in nature mainly directed by continuity or discontinuity? After a general view on the matter, it is concluded that the two cases where a discontinuity can be detected have most probably to do with the emergence of life and consciousness. An exploratory analysis of the concepts of “matter”, “life”, “consciousness” and “reduction” is made in order to clear the question. The history of reductionism and anti-reductionism in the relationships among physics, biology and psychology is summarized. Two other aspects are considereed. Firstly I try to answer to three related problems: can life be reduced to the laws of non-living matter? Can the reality of life be reduced to the reality of non-living matter? Can the laws of life be reduced to the laws of non-living matter? Secondly, I consider the pertinence of a distinction between “nomological” and “nomogonical” to study the relationships between the mental, the biological and the physico-chemical. In this way the validity of laws on the one side, and their instauration and reformation on the other, are formulated separately.
