El 9 de enero, los insurgentes yihadistas lanzaron una ofensiva, desde su santuario en el norte de Mali, hacia la capital del país, Bamako. Tras la toma de Konna por los terroristas y su posterior avance sobre Mopti, el presidente Traore pidió ayuda a Francia. Las fuerzas militares nacionales eran incapaces de rechazar la agresión, y la estabilidad de todo el país estaba gravemente amenazada. Un día después, Francia dio inicio a la Operación Serval. Sobre el terreno, las fuerzas francesas apoyaban a las unidades del Ejército de Mali; por el aire, aviones de combate atacaban las bases logísticas y los campos de entrenamiento en la retaguardia terrorista.
La Comunidad Internacional ha respaldado la contundente acción militar de Francia, que ha resultado decisiva para frenar el avance yihadista. Por su parte, la CEDEAO y la Unión Europea han acelerado el establecimiento de sus respectivas misiones: AFISMA y EUTM Mali. Por ello, las fuerzas de los países de África Occidental han comenzado a llegar a Bamako; mientras que el despliegue de la misión europea está previsto en la mitad de febrero. En el futuro inmediato, la coordinación y el apoyo mutuo de todo este esfuerzo internacional serán los factores claves para eliminar el santuario terrorista que, desde el norte del país, amenaza la estabilidad de toda la región.

On January 9, jihadist insurgents launched an offensive from their sanctuary in northern Mali, towards the national capital, Bamako. After Konna's capture by the terrorists and their advance to Mopti, president Traore asked for help to France. The national military forces were unable to repel the aggression, and the stability of the entire country was seriously threatened. One day later, France began to the Operation Serval. In the field, the French forces supported Army units Mali; by air, warplanes attacked the jihadist logistics bases and training camps.
The International Community has endorsed the France’s forceful military action, which has proved decisive in curbing the jihadist advance. Meanwhile, ECOWAS and the European Union have accelerated the establishment of their missions: AFISMA and EUTM Mali. The forces of West African countries have begun to arrive in Bamako, while the deployment of European mission is expected in mid-February. In the near future, coordination and mutual support of all this international effort will be the key factors to eliminate terrorist sanctuaries which, from the north of the country, threaten the stability of the entire region.
