In industry, design is the common term for a broad range of creative activities. Innovative, competitive products are the basis of commercial success. Thus industry is crucially dependent on the power of its design activities. However, design is not given the right role to play in industry, the available tools are only poorly exploited and many of them still need to reach maturity. Design methodology has a central position in this problem area. Its basis is illustrated, the breadth of its tools are presented and their strengths are demonstrated. This is intended as the basis for a debate, especially among management, about design and one's expectations for design science.
