Naipaul's vindication of the individual's specificity seems to separate literature and politics. But commitment to the individual' s value requires some solidarity (as in Western politics) : in Naipaul's work, individuality springs from opposition to colonial society, mired in ideology or its own past. The individualist' s gaze, however, never fully penetrates the enigma of (others' ) individuality.
