This study of the implicit in novelistic structure (through Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury" and Perec's "La vie mode d'emploi") in terms of the imperfect syllogism shows that 1) an enthymematic structure is fundamental to the novel's success and pleasurable effect 2) an enthymeme is like a novel inasmuch as its implicit premises make it an effective and rational argumentative tool.
