For more than seven decades, social security has failed to materialize and establish itself as a human right. Protection, based on social security, is increasingly facing more and new challenges. However, two of the main aspects of both models are currently affected by the new atypical forms of employment, as well as by informality, underemployment, unemployment and the ageing of the population: access to and extension of protective coverage and its financing. This panorama is exacerbated by the development and progress of technologies that have imposed not only models of life, but also models of work, giving way, inter alia, to the emergence of the “collaborative economy” on the international scene.Literature on this phenomenon is extensive in the field of labor and the future of work, but not in terms of social security. Hence, it is important to analyze the impact of the collaborative economy from this perspective because this type of economy seems to pose yet another challenge and a great threat to the protection of people and social inclusion (whether they are workers or not). Its study and the identification of short, medium and long term solutions to face the current and potential reality will make it possible for social security to fulfill its original role to the benefit of the social fabric.
