Una de las consecuencias que trajo la Recon-quista a nuestras tierras fue la aparición de unas ins-tituciones eclesiásticas llamadas vicarías, de las cua-les se ha tratado relativamente poco. En la Extrema-dura santiaguista hubo más vicarías, pero entre las que sobrevivieron a lo largo de los siglos están las de Mérida, Jerez y Tudía. Debido a las circunstancias histórico-religiosas en las que surgieron, los titulares de estas tres vicarías mantuvieron largos pleitos ecle-siásticos con sus superiores inmediatos, los priores de San Marcos de León, en el caso de las de Mérida y Tudía, y con el obispo de Badajoz en cuanto a la de Jerez se refiere.
One of the consequences that brought the Reconquis-ta to our lands was the appearance of ecclesiastical institutions called vicarías, of which relatively little has been tried. In Extremadura there were more vicarías, but among those that survived throughout the centu-ries are those of Mérida, Jerez and Tudía. Due to the historical-religious circumstances in which they arose, the headmen of these three vicaries maintained long ecclesiastical lawsuits with their immediate superiors, the priors of San Marcos de León, in the case of those of Mérida and Tudía, and with the bishop of Badajoz as far as the one of Jerez is concerned.
