  • Swann's pleasure in listening to Vinteuil's musical phrase is in fact the jouissance of a divided subject who hears fj'ouïs in Lacan' s phrase) music on the one hand, on the other the jouissance of its soul in contact with the music. It is the paradigm for the j'ou'issance (listening) of the creative artist in Proust, in resonance with God's jouissance — the jouissance of the Other — rather than a rival to God as Creator.
