Through the observation of design activities being undertaken in many differing industrial companies, a simple set of communications processes was observed. These showed that the designer, throughout the designing activity, performed within four differing communications roles; these were delegation, reporting, awareness and problem handling. A perceptual model was formed to describe how the design activities and these communications models impinged upon the designer. This used the concept of ‘tiles of constraints’, with associated problem variables, to allow a general, decomposable design structure to be specified. The form of this decomposition was also explored and rules for the distribution and control of the constaints and variables identified. The validity of the model generated is now to be tested in a number of studies. These include industrial case studies of design protocols in which the communications will be observed and design problems identified. Further studies will investigate the incorporation of the modelling procedures within a computer based designing system, using constraint modelling techniques.
