  En este trabajo se exponen los principios básicos del funcionamiento del género en la gramática del español y los mecanismos formales utilizados en la expresión del género inclusivo o no marcado. Se aborda luego con detalle el análisis de algunas de las estrategias alternativas propuestas comunmente (tanto las visibilizadoras como las neutralizadoras), y se comentan sus implicaciones interpretativas y cognitivas. Se concluye que cada lengua tiene su propia manera de ajustarse a las necesidades sociales, y que cualquier cambio lingüístico debe respetar la ecología del sistema y los tiempos propios de la evolución espontánea de la lengua, sin someterla a tutelas o imposiciones externas. Los hablantes en su conjunto son los únicos propietarios legítimos de la lengua.

  In this paper the basic principles governing the expression of grammatical gender in Spanish are analysed, with the focus on the formal resources used for the expression of inclusive, or unmarked, gender. Alternatives to the use of inclusive gender (both visibility enhancing and concealing strategies) are considered, and their interpretative and cognitive implications are discussed in detail. The conclusion is that languages have their way to adjust to social needs. Linguistic change must respect the ecology of the system and the pace of spontaneous evolution, without external pressures and impositions. Speakers are the only legitimate owners of a language.
