Resumen de Nuevo índice para valorar la calidad de aguas superficiales en Costa Rica

El agua es esencial para el mantenimiento de la vida humana, animal y vegetal. En muchos países en desarrollo, existe una permanente degradación de los recursos de agua dulce – en términos de cantidad y calidad – y de los ecosistemas acuáticos. El incremento de agentes contaminantes en las aguas es cada vez mayor debido a actividades antropogénicas. La evaluación de la calidad de un río se puede llevar a cabo por medio del uso de índices, los cuales se caracterizan por sintetizar una gran cantidad de información y que es fácil de entender e interpretar. El objetivo de esta investigación fue establecer el procedimiento para el cálculo de los SI para varios indicadores teniendo en consideración la normativa nacional y las condiciones ambientales del país. Se incluyen fórmulas matemáticas para transformar la concentración de 20 indicadores de calidad a sus respectivos subíndices y poder utilizar el nuevo índice de calidad propuesto. La importancia de esta nueva metodología es que permitirá la creación de nuevos ICAs aplicables a las condiciones ambientales de cada país y adaptada a su propia legislación.

Water is essential for the maintenance of human, animal and plant life. In many developing countries, there is a permanent degradation of freshwater resources - in terms of quantity and quality - and the aquatic ecosystems as well. The increase of pollutants in the water is increasing due to anthropogenic activities. The evaluation of the quality of a river can be carried out using indexes, which are characterized by synthesizing a large amount of information that is easy to understand and interpret. The objective of this investigation was to establish the procedure for the calculation of the SI for several indicators taking into consideration the national regulations and the environmental conditions of the country. Mathematical formulas are included to transform the concentration of 20 quality indicators to their respective sub-indices and to use the new proposed quality index. The importance of this new methodology is that it will allow the creation of new ICAs applicable to the environmental conditions of each country and adapted to its own legislation.
