    Quando gli chiesero di esprimersi sulle sue traduzioni dei Sonetti di Shakespeare, Ungaretti rispose (Poeta e uomini, 1946) che esse andavano lette anche come originali opere di poesia. In effetti, l’analisi ravvicinata dei 40 Sonetti dimostra che, mentre condivide con il suo illustre predecessore temi fondamentali quali la memoria, l’assenza, la bellezza e il tempo, Ungaretti esplora il suo stesso linguaggio dando forma ad uno stile che è inconfondibilmente suo.

    When asked about his translations of Shakespeare’s Sonnets (Poeta e uomini, 1946), Ungaretti replied that they should also be read as original works of art. As a matter of fact, a close analysis of his 40 Sonnets shows that, while sharing some pivotal themes with his famous predecessor (memory, absence, beauty and time), Ungaretti explores his own language, shaping a style that is clearly recognizable as his own.
