It is proposed that creativity could be the result of a kind of a thought process, which Alfred Rothenberg called “janusian” thinking which refers to the conception of two or more opposing ideas, images or concepts at the same time. This is how the general relativity theory of Einstein and the natural selection theory of Darwin originated. According to Freud, the creative thinking is a combination of primary and secondary thingkig, that is the so called tertiary thinking by Silvano Arieti. The union of contrary concepts also take place in the mystical experience. However, the mystical experience is usually not creative. Creativity is considered an additional mental faculty with its own critical period and its own need for an appropriate environment for its development.
