    The aim of this article is to question the applicability of the dictum / modality dichotomy for the description of the constructed meaning of an important group of nouns created by adding the suffix –isme, including nouns of doctrines and some nouns of attitudes. This question appears to be relevant since the constructed meaning of those nouns is a positive attitude (modality) towards the concept represented by their base (dictum). For instance the constructed meaning of populisme is a positive attitude with regard to the people. I show that actually two types of constructed meanings coexist among those nouns and that the dictum / modality dichotomy is applicable to only one of the two. Moreover, this meaning turns out to be a discourse, which needs to be described in a reconstructed dialogic context.

    Cet article a pour objectif de s’interroger sur l’applicabilité de la dichotomie dictum / modalité dans la description sémantique d’un groupe important de noms suffixés en -isme rassemblant les noms de doctrines et certains noms d’attitudes. La pertinence de cette interrogation repose sur le fait que le sens construit de ces noms semble correspondre à une attitude positive (modalité) envers ce que représente leur base (dictum). Par exemple populisme a pour sens construit une attitude positive envers le peuple. L’article montre qu’en réalité deux types de sens construits coexistent au sein de ces noms et que la dichotomie dictum / modalité ne peut s’appliquer qu’à l’un d’eux. Ce sens se révèle de surcroît être un discours et nécessite d’être décrit dans le cadre d’un contexte dialogal reconstitué.
