From the perspective of western, particularly European experience this text analyses the attempt by the 19th century Brazilian medical elite to defend scientific medicine and intending to banish from the market and the medical community other cure professionals who were not recognized as part of regular medicine.
Esse texto analisa, em face da experiência ocidental, particularmente européia, o empenho da elite médica que atuava no Brasil oitocentista, defensores da alopatia, para eliminar do mercado de trabalho de sua profissão os demais prestadores de serviço da cura que não eram reconhecidos por ela como profissionais da medicina.
