Geological mapping and cores show the complexity of the deposits underlying the Las Tablas de Daimiel wetland and allow analyzing its recent evolution. The present day wetland develops upon Pliocene sediments and the incised deposits of the Guadiana River and tributaries, and represents an episode of aggradation involving fluvial and wetland deposition. This episode began during the Holocene and it shows a transition from fluvial to wetland facies both upwards and upstream. The changes recorded during this episode in the incision-aggradation trend, as well as sedimentary style (from “running water” to “slow water” fluvial systems) result from changes in local subsidence rates due to karstic dissolution-induced subsidence developed in relation to previous incision episode.
