  • Resumen
    • Since October 2012, to May 2013, more than 2100 earthquakes have been recorded in the vicinity of the towns of Torreperogil and Sabiote, in the easternmost part of the Guadalquivir Basin. Most of them are located at depths ranging between 2 and 5 km, below the Mesozoic cover. The biggest event had magnitude 3.9 mbLg, and the entire series released an energy equivalent to a 4.4 mbLg shock. From a tectonic point of view, specific studies in the region are barely available due to the apparently scarce deformation of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic cover. However, some hydrogeological studies and the re-interpretation of former seismic reflection profiles, reveal blind faults in the Variscan basement also the cover. After a detailed survey of the epicentral area, we have verified the existence of some fault zones, the most important one striking N-S. In this fault zone, a tectonic fabric with left lateral sense is observed, nevertheless it is also possible to observe dip-slip movements. Its strike and kinematics are in agreement with one of the fault planes for the only computed focal mechanism.
