  • The Barton Peninsula is an ice-free area located in SW King George Island (South Shetland Islands). Numerous lakes have formed following the deglaciation of the peninsula. We cored four of these lakes during the field campaign in February 2012 with the aim to conduct palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. In this paper we present preliminary results including the first radiocarbon dates from the base of three cores. The data suggests the onset of the deglaciation in the Barton Peninsula during the Early Holocene, and small glacier fluctuations during the Late Holocene.
