Resumen de Nación y espacio comunicativo

Philip Schlesinger

  • This essay explores a persistent line of argument in social and political theory. In the sketch that follows, I trace an underlying line of filiation that, in the post—World War II period, stretches from the social communication theory of Karl Deutsch to the anatomy of the Information Age in the work of Manuel Castells. Despite the diverse conceptual languages used in this influential body of work, there are recurrent, underlying assumptions about the possible nature of the relationship between nation and communication. I shall first state my argument briefly and then go on to demonstrate it in more detail. This study is based on research carried out as a part of the “Political Communication and Democracy” project in the ESRC’s Media Economics and Media Culture Programme (L126251022). The author is grateful to the Council for its support.
