  • Resumen
    • The introduction sketches those ideas and problems that have continously led Siegfried J. Schmidt to investigate scientific questions since the 1960s. Since the beginning, his focal interest has been the relationship between language and action. Indeed, analysing this connection has been his central aim, whether in the context of application were his studies of cognition or perception, language, literature or the media. Although he takes a quintessentially sceptical stance on questions of epistemology and linguistic theory, he offers a position that aims to improve our understanding of the present configuration of ‘society-communication-media’, that is, a position that helps us to explain in a verifiable manner the underpinning structural relations between these phenomena. The introduction includes important quotations from the essays reproduced in this volume, but it also features excerpts from a personal interview with Siegfried J. Schmidt. Through this focus on the role of the researcher, the introduction functions as a collage that exemplifies the centrality of individual action and agency that Schmidt -despite his flirtations with system theory- has always defended in his work.
