    En todo el mundo, la finalidad primordial de los edificios es proteger al ser humano de los peligros y molestias del exterior y ofrecer un lugar seguro y cómodo para vivir y desarrollar sus actividades. El tema de la calidad del ambiente al interior de las viviendas está siendo estudiado a profundidad desde distintos ángulos por los efectos adversos que causa a la salud humana. Organizaciones como la Oficina Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), preocupada por los indicadores que señalaban el incremento de las enfermedades causadas por la falta de agua, saneamiento y hábitos de higiene, dio inicio en 1999 al Proyecto regional " Mejoramiento de las condiciones Ambientales de las Comunidades Indígenas", en el que esta incluído el tema de la calidad de aire interior.     Throughout the world, the primary purpose of buildings is to protect human beings from the dangers and discomforts of the exterior and to offer a safe and comfortable place to live and develop their activities. The issue of the quality of the environment inside homes is being studied in depth from different angles because of the adverse effects it causes on human health. Organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), concerned about the indicators that indicated the increase in diseases caused by the lack of water, sanitation and hygiene habits, began in 1999 the Regional Project "Improvement of the Environmental Conditions of Indigenous Communities ", in which the theme of indoor air quality is included.
