The writings of Josef Pieper point to the proper and specific philosophical act: its opening the totality of everything that exists. The philosophical act transcends the "world of work", of utility, of efficiency, of profitability. Astonishment, death, eros are experiences that take the "normal" relationship with the world and unleash the philosophical question. Philosophy, art and religion, which are ends in themselves, and face the enigma of the world, transcend the world of everyday work. They are disfigured when put at the service of political, economic and social objectives. The sophist, the best-seller and the magical practice are figures that represent the falsification of the true philosophical, artistic and religious acts. For Pieper - and in this he is very original - a philosophy with existential resonance demands the theological counterpoint.
