Resumen de Icono y cognición: el ícono puro, los íconos perceptivos y los hipoíconos

Lucia Santaella Braga

  • Peirce has systematically developed the classification of the three types of hypoicons: image, diagram and metaphor. Hypoicons are signs that function as signs because they present a certain type of relation of similarity with the objects they represent. Hence, to a certain extent, hypoicons have a representative function; and as such, albeit of a degenerate kind, they are triadic signs. However, there are a good number of passages in Peirce’s writings, which authorizes us to think about other levels of iconicity of a diadic and monadic kind. This article discusses these two kinds of iconicity and their role in cognition.
