Recent approaches to “dependency theory” in Latin American Studies show an appropriation of the notion of “historical-structural dependency” in combination with other categories such as “the subaltern,” “coloniality of power” and "globalization". As a consequence, there is an obliteration of the relationship between freedom and authority. My article maintains that it is in the dimension of freedom where “dependency theory”produces a relatively original answer to the problems posed by global capitalism. At play, there is a conceptual issue related to the impossibility to totalize social and economic structures in social sciences.
