The text describes the way that the suffering of the victims of the Second World War and the alienation of the perpetrators of the crimes of the Third Reich were represented in the work of artists of the German Democratic Republic such as Horst Stempel, Wilhelm Lachnit, Hans Grundig, Fritz Cremer and Bernhard Heisig, during the aftermath of Germany’s defeat in World War II and the geopolitical division that followed it. The work of these artists is located within a context of tension between realism and formalism, which dominated the painting during the Cold War. The text focuses in the work of Heisig, which intersects between the notions of memory and identity built by the two German states.
