This work presents the analysis and interpretation of the stratigraphic and tectonic record of the Sierra Arana - Meneal region, located in the central sector of the Betic Cordillera, on units belonging to the Internal and Median Subbetic realms. In the sedimentary record five depositional sequences (sensu Mitchum et al. 1977) have been distinguished, all of them marines, representing different moments in the sedimentary and paleogeographical evolution of the area. These sequences are: SD-I, upper Aquitanian - lower Burdigalian; SD-II, upper Burdigalian - Langhian; SD-III, lower and middle Serravallian; SD-IV, lower Tortonian; and SD-V, upper Tortonian. The tectonic record analysis allows the recognition of four main phases yielding structures under different stress regimes: burdigalian paroxysm, intralanghian phase, finiserravallian phase and intratortonian phase. The integration of stratigraphic and tectonic data leads to establish the geodynamic evolution during the Miocene in the studied area, and to the correlation of main events with other recognized at the scale of the Betic Cordillera.
