The aim of this article is to discuss the contribution of the EU institutions to the enhancement of the legal pathways to Europe for people in need of international protection. In particular, the features of resettlement, humanitarian visas and private sponsorships have been analysed. Considering that those legal channels are still largely at the discretion of each EU Member States, a common European approach is needed to foster a more effective and credible migration policy.
