Resumen de Áreas potenciales para el desarrollo del cultivo cacao en el Estado Mérida

En este trabajo se establecen áreas potenciales (óptimas y con ligeras restricciones) para el cultivo cacao, Theobroma cacao L., en el estado Mérida, las cuales se determinaron con base en los requerimientos agroecológicos del cultivo (temperatura, precipitación y suelos). Se delimitaron, aproximadamente, 23.221,86 ha con vocación y sin restricciones para el cultivo, con una superficie mucho mayor a 148.772,63 ha, con restricciones ligeras por pendiente, pedregosidad y drenaje que con un manejo agronómico adecuado podrían ser utilizadas. Teniendo en cuenta: i) la creciente demanda de la industria nacional e internacional por almendras de cacaos criollos para la elaboración de productos manufacturados; ii) el valor del cultivo tradicional del cacao como una herramienta de conservación y iii) que en la actualidad sólo se están cultivando en el estado 4.020 ha, lo cual representa un porcentaje mínimo del área potencial, es muy recomendable que las políticas del estado tiendan a incentivar el cultivo de este importante rubro agrícola, lo cual permitirá ampliar la superficie sembrada y la producción de cacao criollo en el país.

In this work we establish potential areas (optimum and with slight restrictions) for the cultivation of cacao in the state of Mérida. These were determined based on this crops agroecological requirements (temperature, precipitation and soils). Approximately 23.221,86 ha were delimited as appropriate and without restrictions for cultivation. A much larger area, 148.772,63 ha, with slight restrictions due to slope, stoniness and drainage, could be used with appropriate agronomic management. Having in mind that: i) the growing demand of the national and international industry for almonds of criollo cacao for the elaboration of manufactured products; ii) the value of the traditional cultivation of the cacao as a conservation tool and iii) at the present time there are only 4.020 cultivated hectareas in the state, which represents a minimum percentage of the potential area, it is recommended that state policies incentivate the cultivation of this important crop in order to increase cultivated areas and criollo cacao production at the national level.
