El Gabinete de Documentación Técnica del Museo del Prado se creó en los años setenta del siglo xx. A lo largo de sus más de cuatro décadas de andadura, los métodos y los dispositivos de trabajo utilizados para el examen de la pintura han evolucionado. Este desarrollo ha ido parejo al de la tecnología disponible para cubrir dos de los principales objetivos del museo: la conservación y un mayor conocimiento de las piezas de su colección. La actividad del Gabinete se ha visto impulsada en estos años, además, por la colaboración con los Departamentos de Conservación que se reforzaron a finales del siglo pasado. Uno de los cuadros que ejemplifica esta evolución y labor conjunta es el Lavatorio, de Jacopo Tintoretto.

In the 1970s was created the Technical Documentation Office of the Prado Museum. In the course of its more than four decades of activity, the devices and working methodology used for the examination of painting have evolved. This development has been matched by the technology available to cover two of the museum’s main objectives: conservation and the acquisition of new knowledge about the pieces of its collection. The work of the Cabinet has also been encouraged during these years by the collaboration with the conservation departments that were reinforced at the end of the last century. One of the paintings that exemplifies this evolution and joint work is Jacopo Tintoretto’s The Whasing of the Feet.
