¿Quiénes eran los primeros copiantes del Prado? ¿Cómo respondió el museo al interés creciente de estos, especialmente en la segunda mitad del siglo xix? Al intentar responder a estas preguntas, se pondrán de manifiesto las diferencias, y quizá también algunas similitudes, entre aquellos hombres y mujeres que acudían al museo en sus primeras décadas de existencia y los copistas de hoy. Aquellos fueron público preferente de un establecimiento que les permitía instalar sus caballetes todos los días de la semana, mientras las puertas se abrían al resto de los visitantes en un horario muy limitado. La correspondencia entre José y Federico de Madrazo, así como la documentación que se conserva en el Archivo del Museo Nacional del Prado, nos acercarán a la relación de la copia con los alumnos de la Academia y la llegada de los primeros copiantes extranjeros.

Who were the first copyists of the Prado? How did the museum respond to their growing interest, especially in the second half of the 19th century? The answer to these questions will highlight some differences, and perhaps some similarities, between those men and women who came to the museum during its first decades of existence and the copyists of today. Those were the target audience of an establishment that allowed them to go through the front door with their easels every day of the week, while the rest of the visitors had very limited hours to visit it. The correspondence between José and Federico de Madrazo, as well as the documentation kept in the Archives of the Museo Nacional del Prado, will bring us closer to the connection of the copy with the students of the academy and the arrival of the first foreign copyists.
