  • The relation between individual and collectivity is central to Remembrance. Proust refuses both symbiotic relations of physical continuity (the aristocracy, love) , and spatial organisations of the individual' s place in the State (the professions, theatre). But in art, the artist creates necessary order through metaphors, while his position in the community is defined temporally.
