El artículo sostiene que la actitud de Ortega entre la Guerra Civil y el Franquismo se explica desde su defensa del liberalismo reformista y el rechazo del comunismo utópico. Esto le llevó a aposar por Franco como un mal menor, identificando al bando republicano con el comunismo. Pero después de la derrota del fascismo en 1945, disminuyó su aceptación del bando vencedor en España, al quedar liberalismo y comunismo enfrentados en el Mundo. La situación excepcional de la circunstancia, le llevó a buscar “espacios de libertad” en España, al tiempo que se comprometía con proyectos europeístas y atlantistas.

The article argues that Ortega´s attitude towards the Spanish Civil War and the Francoism, is based on his defense of the reformist Liberalism and the rejection of the utopian Communism. This led him to support Franco as the lesser evil, identifying the Republicans with the Communists. But, after the defeat of Fascism in 1945, his acceptance of the Dictatorship diminished, due to the confrontation of Liberalism and Communism in the World. The exceptional situation of the circumstance led him to look for “spaces of freedom” in Spain, as the same time as he was committed to pro-European and Atlanticist projects.
