This paper presents the design and application of personalized formative self-assessment tests, in the framework of adaptive learning in virtual learning environments. The tests were customized taking into account the predominant learning styles in the groups and the knowledge level of the domain item. The experience compares two groups of university students, which belong to different semesters of the same course, following the approach of continuous improvement. The results show significant improvement in the learning process in the second group, which is shown in the results of midterm exams.
