This paper addresses the question of how computers can be effectively used as a tool to support the total spectrum of activities that comprise engineering design. At present, highly specific components of the design activity are supported by purpose-written software systems, e.g. surface modelling, NC machining, and attempts to provide overall support are made by linking these islands of technology. We present an alternative philosophy that focuses upon the control and management of information rather than the underlying software technology. We introduce the basic principles of the design information system (DIS) based on these ideas and outline how such a system can be implemented.
