Resumen de Un solar emblemático del Bilbao decimonónico. Distintos proyectos para los terrenos del Convento de San Agustín y el monumento a los caídos en la Primera Guerra Carlista del Cementerio de Mallona

A lo largo de los dos últimos tercios del siglo XIX, los terrenos del antiguo Convento de San Agustín tuvieron una especial significación para la población bilbaína, ya que allí había tenido lugar una de las más heroicas resistencias de los vecinos de la villa frente al asedio de las tropas carlistas en diciembre de 1836. Este hecho motivó que sucesivamente se formularan distintos proyectos de monumentos conmemorativos, funerarios e incluso plazas porticadas destinados a perpetuar la memoria de los fallecidos en aquella contienda. No obstante, diversos problemas, principalmente económicos, impidieron la materialización de todos ellos, de modo que finalmente el solar sirvió de emplazamiento para el actual Ayuntamiento de la villa.

During the final two thirds of the XIX century, the grounds of the old Convent of San Agustín held a special significance for the population of Bilbao, since this was where the population of Bilbao put up a heroic resistance to the siege by Carlist troops in 1836. This event led to the successive formulation of different projects for commemorative and funereal monuments, and even for squares with porticoes, intended to perpetuate the memory of those who fell in that engagement. However, economic problems prevented their realisation and the grounds were finally used for building the present day Town Hall. The aim of my paper will be to analyse all of these projects from the symbolic and artistic point of view.

XIX. mendeko azken bi herenetan, San Agustin komentua izandako lurrek esangura berezia izan zuten bilbotarrentzat, hantxe erakutsi baitzuten erresistentzia Bilboko bizilagunek karlisten tropek hiria setiatu zutenean. Gertakari hori zela-eta, hainbat eta hainbat proiektu egin ziren, beti ere gatazka hartan hildakoak gogoratzeko: bilbotarren erresistentzia gogoratzeko monumentua, hilobi-monumentua edo arkupedun plaza. Kontuak kontu, diru-arazoak zirela-eta, ez zen bat bera ere gauzatu eta azkenean, orube horretan hiriko Udaletxea eraiki zen. Nire komunikazioan artearen eta sinbologiaren ikuspuntuetatik aztertuko ditut ahalegin horiek guztiak.
