Resumen de Las identidades soñadas de Bilbao. Fuentes y contextos históricos para el análisis de las secuencias de los imaginarios urbanos de una villa vasca (siglos XVI-XIX)

Desde el siglo XVI son numerosas las descripciones que tratan de caracterizar y definir la naturaleza urbana de la villa de Bilbao. Todas pretenden bosquejar la identidad, el carácter de la ciudad. En muchas domina la recreación, en algunas la ensoñación; muy pocas objetivan la realidad histórica de la villa. Sin embargo, unas y otras constituyen diagnósticos puntuales de un imaginario urbano que secuencializa la historia de Bilbao desde los orígenes remotísimos a un futuro de esplendor y gloria. Este imaginario urbano es muy redundante en los presupuestos que expresa y en las idealizaciones que evoca. Bilbao es ciudad no sólo porque sea una mera aglomeración de hombres, sino porque éstos habitan en unos edificios bien alzados, transitan por unas calles y plazas correctamente delineadas, se surten en unos mercados intramuros que no conocen carestías y son gobernados por unos notables celosos del interés colectivo. En esta urbe “inventada” se ubica una comunidad imaginada que sublima los enfrentamientos y conflictos, que acentúa la vocación integradora de sus vecinos y que tiene a gala auto(re)presentarse como una República Honrada, sin duda la mejor síntesis del título que blasona a la Muy Noble y Muy Leal Villa de Bilbao

XVI. mendeaz geroztik asko dira Bilbo hiriaren ezaugarriak eman eta nolakoa den zehaztu nahi duten azalpenak. Denak gura dute hiriaren izaera eta nortasuna adierazi. Batzuetan errekreazioa da nagusi, beste batzuetan, berriz, ametsa; gutxi dira objektiboak hiriaren errealitate historikoarekin. Alabaina, batzuk zein besteak, hiriaren antzinako sorreratik etorkizun handi eta disdiratsura doan eta Bilboren historiaren sekuentziak ematen dituen irudipenezko hiriaren aldian aldiko diagnostikoak dira. Irudipenezko hiri hau oso erredundantea da azaltzen dituen aurretiaz finkatutako oinarrietan eta gomutatzen dituen idealizazioetan. Bilbo ez da hiria bertan jendea pilatzen delako soilik, ezpabere ze jende hori ondo eraikitako etxeetan bizi delako, egoki trazatutako kaleetan eta plazetan dabilelako, harresi-barruko merkatuetan egiten dituelako erosketak eta denen onura arretaz bilatzen duten gobernariak dituelako. Asmatutako hiri honetan irudikatutako komunitatea dago kokatuta, liskarrak eta gatazkak goraipatzen dituena, bertako herritarren bokazio integratzailea nabarmentzen duena eta bere burua harro aurkezten duena Errepublika Prestu bezala, duen Bilboko Hiri Txit Zintzo eta Leial tituluaren laburpenik onena zalantzarik gabe.

From the XVI century onwards numerous descriptions have been made that have tried to characterise and define the urban nature of the township of Bilbao. All have attempted to sketch the identity, the character of the city. Many have been marked by their recreational character, some by dreaming; very few give an objective view of the historical reality of the township. Nonetheless, all constitute timely diagnoses of an urban imaginary that divides the history of Bilbao into sequences, from its remotest origins to a future of splendour and glory. In this urban imaginary there is a great abundance of suppositions expressed and idealisations evoked. Bilbao is a city not only because it is a mere agglomeration of people, but because the latter live in well constructed buildings, they walk in streets and squares that are correctly laid out, they obtain supplies in urban markets where there are no shortages, and they are governed by notables who are jealous guardians of the collective interest. In this “invented” city an imagined community is situated that sublimates confrontations and conflicts, that accentuates the vocation for integration of the residents and that makes a show of presenting itself as an Honest Republic, without doubt the best synthesis of the title which extols the Very Noble and Very Loyal Township of Bilbao.
