    El artículo pretende ofrecer una visión integradora sobre los diversos aspectos que conformaban el espacio en el que se desarrollaba la vida pública de los bilbaínos en la Edad Media. Para ello se han tratado fundamentalmente aspectos físicos (el plano urbano, los arrabales, los ensanches, el puerto, los puentes, el sistema defensivo, el espacio de la espiritualidad) pero también otros que afectaban a la configuración física de la villa y a la vida de sus habitantes, como el abastecimiento y evacuación del agua, los incendios o las inundaciones.

    The article offers an integrated view of the different aspects that made up the space in which the inhabitants of Bilbao developed their public life in the Middle Ages. To this end attention has basically been paid to physical aspects (the urban map, the districts, the expansions, the port, the bridges, the defensive system, the space of spirituality) but also to others affecting the physical make up of the township and the life of its inhabitants, such as the supply and disposal of water, fires and floods.

    Artikuluaren helburua Erdi Aroko bilbotarren eguneroko jardunaren espazioa osatzen zuten alderdiei buruzko ikuspegi integratzailea eskaintzea da. Horretarako batez ere alderdi fisikoak (hiriaren planoa, errebalak, zabalguneak, portua, zubiak, babes-sistemak, espiritualitatearen gunea) aztertu dira, baina baita hiriaren antolaketa fisikoa eta bilbotarren bizimodua osatzen zuten beste alderdi batzuk ere, hala nola, ur-hornidura eta uren hustuketa, suteak edota uholdeak.
