El Bilbao folletinesco de Gustavo de Maeztu

    Resulta cuando menos muy difícil entender la obra de Gustavo de Maeztu sin Bilbao. Bilbao no solamente aparece como motivo de alguno de sus cuadros más intensos, sino que fue el escenario de sus andanzas juveniles, alrededor de la rotonda del café Arriaga, donde se fundó la revista El Coitao, y más tarde de sus empeños intelectuales, como la creación de la Asociación de Artistas Vascos, y escenario temprano de una de sus novelas folletinescas y estrepitosas, El imperio del Gato Azul (donde aparece con el nombre de Hesperia), y de algunos lances de Las Andanzas y episodios del Sr. Doro, es una ciudad desdibujada por la invención literaria y por eso mismo extremadamente reconocible. Es el Bilbao de la primera década de este siglo con todas sus contradicciones sociales y políticas, el de la ciudad comercial e industrial, en la que surgen artistas y personalidades fuertes: los hermanos Arrue, Tomás Meabe, Estanislao Mª de Aguirre, Mogrovejo, Guezala... Una ciudad execrada y amada a partes iguales, como todas las ciudades que el artista interioriza, y a la vez imprescindible, ineludible, motivo recurrente de sus pasos perdidos y de sus mejores invenciones.

    It would, to say the least, be difficult to understand the work of Gustavo de Maeztu without Bilbao. Not only does Bilbao appear as the motif of some of his most intense works, but it was also the scenario of his youthful activities, around the rotunda of the Arriaga café where the journal El Coitao was founded, and of his later intellectual efforts, such as the creation of the Association of Basque Artists, and the early scenario of one of his feuilletonesque and uproarious novels. In the Empire of the Blue Cat (where it appears under the name of Hesperia), and of some of the events of Las Andanzas and episodes of Sr. Doro, it is a city blurred by literary invention and for this very reason extremely recognisable. This is the Bilbao of the first decade of the XX century with all of its social and political contradictions, the city of commerce and industry, in which artists and strong personalities emerge: the Arrue brothers, Tomás Meabe, Estanislao Mª de Aguirre, Mogrovejo, Guezala... a city abhorred and loved in equal measure, like all cities that are interiorised by an artist, and at the same time one that is indispensable, unavoidable, the recurrent motif of his lost steps and of his best inventions.

    Oso zaila da Gustavo de Maezturen lana Bilbo alde batera utzita ulertzea. Bilbo bere kuadrorik bizienetako batzuetako gaia ezezik, gaztetako kontu asko gertatutako lekua ere izan zen; Arriaga kafetxearen inguruan, esate baterako. Hantxe sortu zuen El Coitao aldizkaria eta, geroago, ekimen intelektual asko egin zituen. Hantxe sortu zen Euskal Artisten Elkartea eta bere foiletoi iskanbilatsu baten eszenatoki goiztiarra ere izan zen hura; hain zuzen, El Imperio del Gato Azul elaberrian Hesperia izenez agertzen digu Bilbo. Las Andanzas y episodios del Sr. Doro nobelako zenbait pasartetan ere agertzen da. Horrela bada, literatur sormenak desitxuratutako hiria da eta horrexegatik suertatzen da hain ezagutarraza. Mende honetako lehen hamarkadako Bilbo hura dugu, gizarte eta politika mailako kontraesanez betea, eta merkataritza eta industrian oinarritutako Bilbo hartan artista eta nortasun handiko pertsona asko sortu ziren: Arrue anaiak, Tomás Meabe, Estanislao M. de Aguirre, Mogrovejo eta Guezala, besteak beste. Hiri gaitzetsia bezain maitatua, artistak barneratzen dituen hiri guztien antzera, eta, era berean, derrigorrezkoa, saihestezinezkoa, bere asmakizunik onenen eta urrats galduen motibo errepikaria.
