Resumen de On the Tradition and Reception of Palaephatus in Byzantium

Minerva Alganza Roldán

  • The paper aims to present a panoramic view of the reception of Palaephatus’ mythological treatise Περὶ ἀπίστων / Peri apiston in Byzantine Greek literature. The study is organized in three parts: the fi rst one, dedicated to the Christian Chronography, begins with Eusebius, and special attention is paid to the Palaephatean exegesis mentioned by Malalas; the second section focuses on commentary concerning quotations and indirect references found in the works of two prominent scholars of the Komnenian period, Eustathius of Thessalonike and John Tzetzes; the last piece attends to excerpts from Peri apiston in the anthologies of proverbs composed by Greek humanists of the diaspora during the 15th and 16th centuries such as Michael Apostoles. In summary, the entire study off ers a comprehensive record of quotations, thereby increasing the number of indirect testimonies of Palaephatus and demonstrating his remarkable presence in the corpus of Byzantine literature. Moreover, commentary on a selection of texts illustrates the uses and valuations of Peri apiston as historical and mythographic source, as well as ethical example, which can serve to characterize diff erent moments of a decisive period in the history of its transmission and reception.
